Based in Athens, Greece ZUMA Press photojournalist NIKOS PILOS began his professional career in 1987. After a decade covering hard news and feature stories for national dailies, he moved on to shooting for major news weeklies where he did numerous in-depth documentaries on countries in conflict such as Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Romania, Albania and more. In 2004-5 Pilos sent 110 days on assignment in Iraq's red zone doing a series of human interest photo essays on subjects ranging from the rise in cancer rates among Iraqi children, to the new role of Kurdish women as police officers. In October, 2005 he traveled to the earthquake devastated region of northern Pakistan with the Greek and French chapters of Doctors of the World. There, he documented the unending flow of wounded survivors and the teams of volunteers who worked around the clock to help them.

Pilos is a founding member of the Greek Photojournalist's Association. Represented by ZUMA Press, his high-impact photo essays have been published in top media such as Newsweek, Stern, Focus, the New York Times, Panorama and zReportage.com.
