Poor, Fat America.
29 Million Americans live in poverty.
The money that they don't have to buy food is made
up for in state food-vouchers. In these environments
there is a lack of knowledge about healthy eating.
Children in particular see more than 10,000 tv adverts
a year for mostly high-calorie food products and are
therefore most likely to succumb to the temptation
of “eat me!” - “eat more!”
- “eat more comfortably”. Fruit and vegetables
simply can't compete against artificial fragrance
and flavour enhancers. The inhabitants of this “fattening
environment” pay a high price: high blood pressure,
diabetes, and an increased risk of cancer. For years
now the American, Brenda Keneally, has been observing
the phenomenon of obesity amongst young people in
her neighbourhood in New York. These young people
are sometimes shocked when they see themselves in
her photos.
According to a UNICEF study,
one in four school kids between the ages of 13 and
15 in America is overweight. Being overweight is more
common among American children than in any other industrialised
country.
