South Ossetia: The Results of a
Declaration of Independence
Georgia claims South Ossetia
as a part of its national territory. South Ossetia,
however, declared itself independent in 1990 with
the support of Russia. In August 2008 the smouldering
conflict over whether South Ossetia belongs to Georgia
or is independent, escalated into open hostilities.
Thousands of Georgians fled from South Ossetia after
having lost all their belongings and sometimes their
relatives, to look for protection in the Georgian
capital, Tiflis. The German reporter, Frank Röth,
shows the drama of those were driven away. It can
be seen in the imploring face of the mother, as she
begs for help for herself and her child.
