China: Courage to Live

The horrendous earthquake in China in May 2008 has faded from most of our memories. The survivors, however, will have to live with the after-effects for the rest of their lives. Many children died or were grievously injured because school buildings collapsed as the earth started to shake. How can children cope with the loss of limbs? From where do they get the strength to get their bodies, which have been damaged by rubble, to access those last physical reserves? The Japanese photographer, Shiho Fukuda, lives at the moment in Peking. She has recorded how boys and girls train with hope and dedication in a medical centre in Chengdu to learn to live with their handicaps.
