The annual Contest

Once a year, UNICEF Germany presents the “UNICEF Photo of the Year” award to honour photos and photo reportages that document
the personality and living conditions of children worldwide in an outstanding way. The contest is aimed exclusively at professional
photographers.
„High-quality documentary photography can open eyes. The works that are awarded in UNICEF’s annual photography contest, succeed
in doing just that: they open people’s eyes to the situation of children in our world“, says Georg Graf Waldersee, Chairman of the Board
of UNICEF Germany. „The pictures show children‘s fates, honest and sincere, some relentless and some full of hope. They are a powerful
appeal for empathy and compassion, reminding us of our shared mission: to stand up for the well-being of the children worldwide.“

The Participants
Since the launch of “UNICEF Photo of the Year” in 2000, photo journalists from all parts of the world have taken part. Photographers from
more than 95 nations and all five continents have received awards so far. They document in individual photos or photo series the living
conditions of children and young people who find themselves in difficult circumstances such as war, material and emotional distress, after
natural disasters. However, they also portray moments of happiness, joy of living and facets of their different everyday lives.
The prerequisite for participation is a nomination by an internationally renowned expert in photography.

The Prize winner will be invited to the award ceremony and press conference in Berlin. All jury awards will be presented with a certificate. The prize is not endowed.

Epson has been supporting the ‘UNICEF Photo of the Year’ competition for many years. This year's exhibition was also printed by Epson.

An independent jury decides upon the winner.
